HOVERSTA FARMWaterlooGEORGE SMITH Moved to Cruetown, replacing Laurence Smith & family who went to Pettifirth. The GrindBARBARA HUNTER Barbara was still at Hoversta in 1881, her sister Agnes living with her. By 1891 one of them was at Uphouse, the other at Voehead. The MailWILLIAM TULLOCH The Mail was included in holdings taken over by James Sutherland as shown on the Valuation Roll, but this family never moved away from the Mail. There is no indication whether they had less land either. HoverstaROBERT YORSTON This family did not remove from Hoversta at all. MAGNUS YORSTON This family was at ‘Hole Alone’ in 1881, which is sometimes just called Hoversta; perhaps they were at Hole Alone all along? WILLIAM TAIT William Tait and his son-in-law Laurence Twatt got a piece of common each in 1877/78, and between them built New Cottages, the semi-detached houses now known as Seaview. JOHN TULLOCH John and Elizabeth Tulloch moved to the Wart; he died there in 1887. PETER DUNCAN Peter Duncan and family moved to Grindischool, replacing widow Barbara Tait or Murray, whose son Alexander got a piece of common at South Ham in 1879/80 and built a new house on it. JAMES NEILSON James/Hunter Nelson got a piece of common in 1877/78 and built a new house on it – now known as Springfield. MARY TAIT Still at Hoversta in 1881, but died at Grimsetter in 1891. CowgateJOHN SMITH This family moved to Gunhall; Sutherland according to the Valuation Roll also took over Gunhall, yet the folk did not move away. GunhallLAURENCE GIFFORD Remained at Gunhall; probably their land was taken into the farm at this time. |
